The “First Ten” and other writings

 Post 5, “The Honest Truth…

Ok, so I’m really getting into this?

My original plan for this blog was going to be a way for me to hold myself responsible for the writings that i need to do for my Art Theory and criticism class. The class requires me to write a summary on any particular article that that we read each week. We have a list of the articles already, mostly chapters in the two required texts, [The Art of Art History: A Critical Anthology By: Donald Preziosi andCritical terms for Art History By Robert S Nelson and Richard Shiff]as well as a number of handouts with copies made from supplementary texts, [imo authors critiquing/criticizing other authors]. Anyways, I want to publish each weeks summary on here, which means that people other than my wonderful art history teacher may or may not read this. So i would at least like to post somewhat knowledgeable summaries of the texts that i am reading, and interpreting as a student art historian, looking at the art world around from the year 2010. almost as documentary on my generation, and its interaction with art, past, present, and future.

Oh jeeze. I sound like I’m some sort of insane art nerd. please please please, let me counter this by saying that in the past few weeks I have become literally obsessed with this ‘Image Infatuation’ that is Tumblr. my obsession with photography has lead me to create a separate account to collect the images that i find inspiring, similar [to my life, art, etc.], particularly interesting, or just plain hilarious.

^HEY HERES A QUICK SUMMARY OF ALL THAT STUFF UP THERE ^

1. This is an art history blog. I write critiques. (in fact, the next post will be my first critique, on G.W.F. Hegel)

2. I have started a second blog that’s more a personal collection of Images & Such at http://www.tumblr.com/candidcreature

I named the blog “Firsten” and told myself at the beginning that as long as i made it past the first ten posts, i could consider the blog “successful” (i was one of those people who would start a blog, spend all night customizing the layout, write the first intro post and then never log in again).  I’ve made it way past 10, and like all things it has evolved quite a bit since i first started it.

Anyways, heres a list of the summaries i wrote for the readings that we did in class, plus ‘asks’ and other original stuff:

P.S. each opens in a new window for your reading convenience.

P.P.S. PLEASE do not use these as your own papers. i had an incredibly understanding teacher who’s standards for grading our papers were based on content and understanding, rather than sentence structure and cohesiveness.  to be honest you would probably get an awful grade if you turned any of these in as your own. Plus, plagiarism sucks.

G.W.F. Hegel - Philosophy of Fine Art

Leo Tolstoy - What is Art?

Linda Nochlin- Why have there been no great Women Artists?
